Ideal fit for 2 x 3.5" HDD in Falcon Northwest FragBox 2023

By Beej

Project

  • Needed to mount two 3.5” drives for RocketRAID 620 (Sata 3) controller that’s been running solid for 15 years… started with 2TB, then 4TB, currently 8TB with 2TB remaining.
  • Falcon’s stock bracket holds one 3.5” HDD and one 2.5” but two 3.5’s works great with this approach.

Tips

  • not much to screw up…
  • look at your sata power cables in advance and get those snugged up as much as possible with zip ties and aligned with both drives
  • definitely connect the cables to the drives BEFORE installing in the case
  • one drive to tray and then brackets for 2nd drive
  • note in the image, pointing one of the brackets down becomes a great point of stability on the case floor along with the lego and nano tape to lock it all down
  • slide in the combined drives & align tray bolt but don’t tighten… remember there’s a flange that secures bottom of tray to case as well
  • stretch less than full lego length’s worth of nano tape across lego and slide it in under the downward bracket… the channel between nubs of the lego creates a perfect catch point
  • wiggle for fit and tighten the stock tray bolt. that’s it.
