Ideal fit for 2 x 3.5" HDD in Falcon Northwest FragBox 2023

By Beej

Project

  • Wanting to support two HDDs tied to an old HighPoint RocketRAID 620 controller that’s been running solid for 15 years… started with 2TB in simple RAID1, then 4TB, and currently 8TB with 1/4 remaining… good to see 16TB drives dipping into $400 range.
  • Falcon’s stock bracket holds one 3.5” HDD and one 2.5” but two 3.5’s work out well with a little effort

Tips

  • not much to screw up…
  • get sata power cables zip tied and aligned with how you’re going to position drives (sata connectors have keyed orientation)
  • definitely connect cables to drives before installing to case
  • bolt one drive to tray and combine both drives with brackets
  • ** note in the finished image, pointing lower bracket down to rest on lego and nano tape really locks it all in super solid
  • slide in drives & align tray mounting screw with case, but don’t tighten just yet… remember there’s also a bottom flange that secures tray to case
  • cut piece of nano tape about half length of lego and stretch it across to thin out
  • slide nano’ed lego in under lower bracket with edge between lego nubs forming perfect lock channel
  • wiggle for fit and tighten the stock tray bolt. that’s it.
  • still plenty of clearance for water pipes without pinching… i don’t have a graphics card so that helps spacing a lot but it looks doable by snaking pipes in space between drives and PSU
